This guide outlines the requirements for safely packaging devices that contain lithium-ion (Li-Ion) batteries for shipment.
General Requirements
Before packaging, ensure the following:
Devices must be switched off.
Batteries must be securely installed inside the devices.
Devices must be protected from accidental activation.
Batteries must be undamaged and not swollen.
Packaging Requirements
The packaging must meet the following standards:
The outer package must be rigid and able to withstand a 1.2 meter drop without:
Devices or batteries being damaged
Devices activating
Devices moving into contact with each other
Each device must be individually protected to prevent:
Contact with other devices
Movement inside the package
Accidental activation
Inner packaging materials (e.g., foam, bubble wrap) must be used to fill empty space inside the box.
Avoid unnecessary open space in the package.
Maximum package weight: 25 kg
Maximum battery content per package: 5 kg
(Equipment weight is not included in this limit.)
Lithium Battery (LB) Label Requirements
An LB label must be applied when the shipment contains three (3) or more devices with Li-Ion batteries (find a downloadable label in the bottom of this article)
Label requirements:
Minimum size: 100 × 100 mm
Must be clearly visible on the package
Must be printed in color
Must include the red dashed border
Note:
For road transport, the LB label requirement applies only to certain carriers.
